Tired of your crowded teeth but think you’re too old for braces? Invisalign gives you the smile you want without the “railroad tracks”. Invisalign is a system that was developed by a Silicon Valley software engineer. He figured out how to use technology to create a virtual model of a person’s mouth. With this model, the dentist can customize a plan to position the teeth where they need to be. Each case is unique and requires a specific number of movements to put that mouth in to an ideal position. Each of these movements is accomplished by 1 set of clear plastic trays, or “aligners”. Each Aligner is worn for 2 weeks, changing then to the next set. The patient wears the aligners “23” hours a day, taking them out only to eat or clean their teeth. The entire process is usually faster than traditional braces, most cases completed within 13 months. Sometimes the dentist bonds little clear plastic buttons to specific teeth to snap the aligner on to. Each case is different. Statistically, most Invisalign patients are former orthodontic patients whose childhood braces worked at the time, but whose teeth have shifted out of line over the years. Also, all Invisalign is not used for vanity alone. Many people have incorrect occlusion that leads to chipped and broken teeth, premature wear, and even headaches. Putting the teeth into the ideal position prevents future tooth damage and/or tooth loss. Straight teeth are easier to clean, helping to prevent cavities and gum disease.
